Dessert plate depicting a bust of Venus d'Arles,
1812
Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, established 1756, France
y753
This plate is from the second of two services by Sèvres that are decorated with images of ancient sculptures. Executed between 1812 and 1817, the service was given to Pope Pius VII. The date when it left the Vatican is unknown, but pieces were for sale in Philadelphia in 1888. William Prime purchased five plates and included this one in the Museum’s founding donation of ceramics in 1895. This plate shows a detail of the Venus of Arles, discovered in 1651 and painted here as if it were a cameo.
