Leaf a. Signature and date. Leaf b. Five-character archaic verse describing the peaceful scenery of a small temple pavilion in the southern part of Suzhou, a site ideal for literati pursuits such as composing poetry, playing the qin, and meditating. A variation of this poem under the title “Beisi shuige 北寺水閣” (Water pavilion at the Beisi temple) is recorded in Shitian xiansheng ji 石田先生集 . Mingdai yishu jia ji huikan 明代藝術家集繪刊, no. 2. (Taipei: Guoli zhongyang tushuguan, 1968). Vol. 1, no. 2, p. 144. A poem similar to the version in the literary collection is also recorded at the front of a handscroll by Shen Zhou titled Paintings of Peonies (Shaoyao tu); reproduced in Shanghai bowuguan cang Ming si jia jingpin xuanji 上海博物館藏明四家精品選集 (Hong Kong: Daye gongsi, 1996), p. 34.
