Winter landscape,

ca. 1860–70

attributed to Louis-Joseph Deflubé, French, 1797–1884
1998-209
By the 1850s the Fontainebleau Forest-only an hour's train ride from Paris-had become a popular Sunday destination for urban tourists escaping the industrialized city. Enterprising developers published guide books and self-guided walking tours with corresponding signposts. These identified ancient trees and scenic vistas that offered an experience of unsullied nature. A close look at this winter landscape reveals one such signpost beside the snowy road. The region lured both painters and photographers, who worked together sympathetically: photographers drew inspiration from painted sketches, while painters collected photographs as source material for their compositions.
