Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse,

1758–64

William Hogarth, 1697–1764; born and died London, England
x1988-81
Hogarth first published this engraving in 1758 as a graphic version of his self-portrait, painted the previous year and now in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Famous for his contemporary social satires, Hogarth ironically depicts himself here in the guise of a history painter at his easel, studiously limning out a classical composition of the comic muse Thalia holding her mask, with a copy of his own engraving The Analysis of Beauty folded into a portfolio at the artist's feet. In 1764, Hogarth corrected and republished his engraved self-portrait as the frontispiece for an edition of his collected prints.
