Standing Ananda holding a rosary
Chinese
Tang dynasty, 618–907
y1940-1
Ananda was the disciple and personal attendant of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha. Ananda often accompanied the Buddha on his journeys and memorized the discourses he delivered to audiences. After the Buddha’s death, Ananda became known as the “Treasurer of Dharma” for his recounting of the Buddha’s teachings. Tradition holds that Ananda’s recitals became the basis for the early Buddhist textual canon. In this sculpture, he is posed as the faithful disciple, clothed in monk’s robes and holding prayer beads, his head tilted in an attentive expression.
