A proteinaceous material like ivory would seem an odd choice for making tobacco pipes, but when engraved, they made ideal curios for sale to whalers and other European visitors. Beautiful, but foul to smoke, their form closely followed earlier Chinese prototypes made with wood stems and stone bowls. This one is engraved with hunting scenes showing whales and whale-hunters in umiaks and kayaks.
