Quién es quién (Who is Who),

1991

Javier Arevalo, 1937– 2020; born and died Guadalajara, Mexico
2001-49
Intertwining hands, heads, and faces dominate the space in Quién es Quién. Circling the frame, they suggest a crowd assembling on a plaza, the cacophony of a lively conversation, or the many moods of an individual. Arévalo combines the techniques and compositional strategies of twentieth-century Mexican muralists, who used the large-scale mural format to deliver sociopolitical critiques. Arévalo’s work also recalls the playful, nonsensical narratives of Mexican magical realist literature, in which historical events are infused with elements of fantasy or supernatural occurrences to present alternative storylines.
