Los Encuentros (Encounters),

1990

Javier Arevalo, 1937– 2020; born and died Guadalajara, Mexico
2001-47
Intertwining hands, heads, and faces create a parade of expressions in Los Encuentros. Marching along the exterior edges of the image, these figures might equally suggest a crowd assembling on a plaza, the cacophony of a lively conversation, or the many moods of an individual. Arevalo combines the techniques and compositional strategies of the two sources of his training: the Mexican muralists and academic lessons of figure painting taught at the National School of Arts in Mexico City. His talent was recognized early in his life; at age ten, he began studying drawing, painting, and calligraphy with Jorge Martínez, an assistant to muralist José Orozco.
