As part of a group of artists known as the Generación de la Ruptura (Breakaway Generation), Coronel rejected the style of the earlier Mexican muralists, who combined Indigenous and colonial imagery in an effort to develop a new national style of art. In contrast, Coronel and other Breakaway artists attempted to create a universal aesthetic language through abstract shapes and bold colors that allude to pre-Columbian Indigenous art.
