Interior window, Maine,
ca. 1910–1915
Clarence H. White, 1871–1925; born West Carlisle, OH; died Mexico City, Mexico; active Ohio and New York
x1983-870
During the summers from 1910 to 1915, White taught photography in coastal Maine; the curriculum was modeled after the plein-air excursions offered by painters—including Arthur Wesley Dow and William Merritt Chase—to vacation areas near New York. The program provided an opportunity for students to enhance their technical skills in shooting and printing photographs while also enjoying nature. Here, White captures a coastal vista framed through the glazing bars of a window; the division of the scene by the bars recalls the ofttaught compositional rule for photographing a landscape by capturing the horizon in the bottom third of the frame.
