Mark Markov-Grinberg, Russian, 1907–2006
2001-238
Having worked as a documentary photographer for various Soviet newspapers throughout the late 1920s, in 1930 Markov-Grinberg joined the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS), one of the nation’s most important news agencies, comparable to the Associated Press in the United States. His images appeared across Soviet media outlets until 1948, when he lost his position at TASS due to Stalin’s anti-Semitic campaign. In this photograph, biplanes fly in a star-shaped formation during the first aviation parade at Tushina Airbase, later the sight of many Soviet aircraft exercises during the Cold War.
