Three Youths in Simao, Yunnan Province,

1981, printed 2002

Liu Heung Shing 劉香成, born 1951, Hong Kong; active Shanghai, China
2002-305
Born to mainland parents living in Hong Kong, Liu was educated in China and Hong Kong before studying political science and journalism at Hunter College, New York. After graduation he worked for Time magazine in China, where he covered the death of Mao Zedong as well as the trial of Jiang Qing. His 1989 photographs of the Tiananmen Square incident won Picture of the Year, and in 1992 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for covering the collapse of the Soviet Union. Three Youths was taken at the end of the Mao era, and the presence of the photographer reflected in the youths' glasses challenges the audience to ask—who is watching whom?
