Interior of a Forge,
1600–1610
Abraham Bloemaert, 1566–1651; born Gorinchem, Netherlands; died Utrecht, Netherlands
2002-278
The Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert drew throughout his lengthy career. While most of his vast output consists of preparatory studies for religious and mythological paintings, a smaller group of works includes landscape drawings, several of which feature tumbledown cottages and rustic interiors such as this delicately colored scene in a blacksmith’s forge. There is a related pen-and-wash drawing by Bloemaert of a similar scale, which represents the opposite end of the same low-ceilinged room, also featuring the colossal pair of bellows but lacking the seated figure in the corner.
