Nassau #4,

Ralston Crawford, American, born Canada, 1906–1978
1996-203
An early American modernist, Crawford received training as an artist in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Paris. He is recognized today for his paintings, prints, and photographs of urban life and industry, which put a premium on abstract form over description, especially later in his career. The maritime theme of Nassau #4 reflects a long-standing interest of Crawford’s. His father was a ship captain in the Great Lakes region, and in the mid-1920s Crawford himself worked on steamships in Central America and the Caribbean.
