Painted Landscape (The Love Letter),

1950

David Smith, 1906–1965, born Decator, IN; died South Shaftsbury, VT; active Bolton Landing, NY
2004-52
Painted Landscape presents what seems to be a woman facing a letter dangling from a branch of an abstracted treelike landscape. With its glyphic forms and curved branches, Painted Landscape recalls sculptural calligraphy. Smith worked as a painter before turning his focus to sculpture. Negotiating the planar language of painting and the spatial language of sculpture remained important to him throughout his career; he described his sculptural practice as “drawings in space.”
