Two Cattle,
late 1580s
This study of two cattle was recently attributed to Andrea Boscoli, a prolific draftsman who made copies after a wide range of sources throughout his career. The artist’s incisive chalk technique is characterized by a geometrizing approach to form—here visible in the faceted treatment of the animals’ dappled skin—that pervades all of his drawings. In this case, Boscoli may have improvised on a Northern print source for the juxtaposition of the two animals, which closely resembles a detail of Lucas van Leyden’s celebrated engraving The Milkmaid.
