Acropolis,
ca. 1906–10
Charles Hoffbauer, French, 1875–1957
2004-479
Charles Hoffbauer’s father was Theodor Hoffbauer, an architect known for panoramic reconstructions of ancient cities and of Paris in earlier times. The son studied with Gustave Moreau, traveled to Italy in 1902, and was in Greece and Egypt between 1906 and 1910. This sketch captures the forms of mountain and temple in the spirit of his father, but bathed in jewel-colored light recalling the Symbolist style of his master, Moreau.
