American Soldier Conversing with Small French Girl Traveling,

1944

Bert Brandt
1995-6
This charming photograph, taken by one of the many Acme photojournalists who supplied American newspapers with images, captures the moment when Private Leon Pawinski of Gary, Indiana, made a gift of a piece of candy to a young French girl. It was taken one week after the first of the Allied troops stormed the beaches in Normandy and began advancing through France to complete its liberation from Nazi Germany.
