When the British artist John Constable was awarded a gold medal for his painting The Hay Wain in the Paris Salon of 1824, his reputation in France grew so rapidly that throughout the 1820s and 30s the Parisian art dealer John Arrowsmith maintained a room devoted to his paintings and oil sketches. There, French Naturalists-including the young Rousseau-found inspiration in Constable's practice of sketching directly from nature. One of only four prints ever produced by Rousseau, this impression of the etching Oaks and Rocks was published in 1861 in the canonical art history journal Gazette des beaux-arts.
