Adoration of the Magi,
1500
Robetta, Italian, 1462–after 1534
x1934-609
Robetta learned many of the skills necessary for engraving while working as a goldsmith in Florence. This devotional image is one of seventeen known engravings that bear his signature—here inscribed underneath the fur-trimmed hat in the lower right corner. An eclectic artist, Robetta mined a wide range of sources, including altarpieces by Filippino Lippi and prints by Albrecht Dürer, combining figurative and landscape motifs to create his own compositions.
