Cattle (Frontispiece)

Nicolaes Berchem, Dutch, 1620–1683
x1934-434 a

One of the leading Dutch seventeenth-century Italianate landscape painters, Berchem specialized in pastoral scenes bathed in a warm Mediterranean light. He was also a prolific etcher, producing several series devoted to farm animals, including this early one of six views of carefully observed cows—a mainstay of Holland’s thriving cattle-breeding and dairy industries. The frontispiece features a young milkmaid, who like the shepherdess in the adjoining painting by Moreelse, conveys a coquettish appeal.
