Les Gitanos (The Gypsies),

1862

Édouard Manet, 1832–1883; born and died Paris, France
x1944-221
Manet’s early paintings included one recorded in this etching , which was published with the title Los Gitanos in 1862. Following Manet’s one-man exhibition in 1867, the dissatisfied artist cut the canvas and preserved just three pieces. Princeton’s painting Woman with a Cigarette was once thought to be a fourth fragment, but x-ray examination has proved that it was always an independent work of art. According to Juliet Wilson-Bareau, Los Gitanos was painted in Manet's style of the 1860s, with shading to indicate depth, whitle Woman with a Cigarette. reflects a later style, to which Manet turned around 1870.
