Jacques de la Faille,

1580

Hendrick Goltzius, 1558–1617; born Mülbracht, Netherlands; died Haarlem, Netherlands
x1934-654
This elaborate double portrait probably commemorates the couple’s marriage in 1580. Jacques de la Faille was a merchant in Antwerp and the Colonel of the Civil Guard there until he fled the Spanish controlled city in 1584 for Haarlem in the Dutch Republic. His military identity is emphasized in the portrait, frame, and inscription: "Here I stand, armed, to protect the law and defend the fatherland and fearlessly to fall and shed blood for the welfare of the people. For this is the only virtue of a citizen and a good general."
