Coat of Arms of Arnout van Beresteyn,
1579
Hendrick Goltzius, 1558–1617; born Mülbracht, Netherlands; died Haarlem, Netherlands
x1934-710 c
Early in his career, Goltzius specialized in small and meticulously engraved portraits of the citizens of Haarlem, where he had settled in 1577. This three-quarter view of Arnout van Beresteyn imbues the twenty-three-year-old poet and nobleman with the dignity of the traditional ancient Roman profile pose while also allowing Van Beresteyn to confidently survey the viewer. On the portrait’s reverse, the Roman numerals in the inscription can be rearranged to indicate
the date of its completion: MCCCCCLVVVVVIIII (1579).
