This portrait represents a gentleman of upper- and middle-class Netherlandish society. The innkeeper Allaert Fransz. Schatter’s medal emphasizes his central role in Haarlem’s civic culture. Goltzius places him in front of the Grote Markt, the town’s main square, with Schatter’s inn, the Orange Apple, visible over his right shoulder.
