Agnes Martin, American, 1912–2004
Printed at Triton Press
2006-137.9
The reclusive abstract painter Agnes Martin first came to prominence in 1958 with square canvases covered in closely spaced parallel lines, delicately drawn with a ruler in graphite or colored pencil. This print documents a stylistic change in Martin’s work after she left New York for New Mexico in 1967, when she began replacing drawn lines with thin bands of painted color. Here, Martin uses rubber stamps to achieve a similar effect—creating a mass of fine lines that seem to float above the paper like a shimmering veil.
