Study for Saint Herculanus Visited by an Angel,

1586–87

Paolo Veronese, Italian, 1528–1588
x1944-6
This rare brush drawing by the Venetian artist Paolo Veronese was made toward the end of his career, when his workshop carried out many of his paintings. The expressive luminosity of Veronese’s late style is conveyed in this drawing by the flickering brushwork that defines the figures and evokes the surrounding atmosphere. Representing Saint Herculanus, the sixth-century bishop of Brescia, the sheet is a preliminary design—including a pentimento, or change, in the saint’s head—for an altarpiece in the church of Sant’Andrea in Toscolano Maderno, on the west shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy. Although signed by Veronese, the canvas probably was executed by his brother, Benedetto Caliari.
