Louis XIII,

1633–34

Michel Lasne, French, 1590–1667
Jacques Callot ?, French, 1592–1635
x1934-356

Like many modern European rulers, the French king Louis XIII was often portrayed on horseback, deliberately evoking equestrian sculptures from antiquity. In this celebratory work by the official royal printmaker Michel Lasne, the thirty-three-year-old monarch, accompanied by the allegorical figure of Fame, is shown posing before a panoramic battle scene. This backdrop, possibly etched by Jacques Callot himself, replicates Callot’s print of the Battle of Avigliana, which commemorated a recent French military victory over the Spanish.
