Prisoner and Four Riflemen,
ca. 1937
William Gropper, 1897–1977; born New York, NY; died Manhasset, NY; active Croton-on-Hudson, NY
x1946-252
A committed political activist, Gropper took on left-wing causes as subject matter throughout his career as a cartoonist, printmaker, and painter. This dark and sinister scene, strategically highlighted with white gouache, is probably a study for one of the paintings featured in his first solo exhibition at the ACA Gallery in New York in 1937. Dedicated "to the Defenders of Spanish Democracy," these works vividly depicted the violence of the Spanish Civil War (1936–39).
