Zhang Hongtu 張宏圖, born 1943, Pingliang, China; active New York, NY
2008-332 a-b
Zhang Hongtu’s paired scrolls were digitally composed from dozens of separate photographs he took in Beijing, part of a well-known landscape painting by the fifteenth-century artist Shen Zhou (Lofty Mount Lu), and Mao Zedong’s calligraphy of his famous poem (“Snow”). Fusing old and new, this work obliges us to ask, what have we taken from the past and what will we offer to the future? What sources do we draw from and which do we reject? And, above all, who we are and where are we headed? Zhang Hongtu himself confesses, “I know where these people came from, but I don’t know where they are going.”
