A scene showing the movement of students from the classroom and plum tree, at right, into the fields and with dams and power lines, at left. The flag near center bears the slogan "In Agriculture, Learn from Dazhai." Over the school gate is an inscription reading "Hold to the class struggle to aid agricultural production." At the bottom right it reads: "Like today in Huibei, the fires are redder." Mao Zedong's "In Agriculture, Learn from Dazhai" (Nongye xue Dazhai 農業學大寨) campaign ran from 1964 to 1976. Through self-sacrifice the farmers of Dazhai village covered a rocky mountain with soil and dug a reservoir at the top to gain arable lands. Used an exemplary model, Mao's directive resulted in hills being moved, tunnels built, and canals and reservoirs dug with blind zeal; unfortunately, in some cases these projects later turned out to be practically useless. This is a drawing for a paper-cut design, the figures are outlined and filled in with wash. Certain lines have been covered over in opaque white ink. The artist's signature in pencil is located at the bottom right.
