Macula B/2,

2006

Tobias Putrih, Slovenian, born 1972
2008-64
Known for a body of work in sculpture, video, and installation, Tobias Putrih explores subjects ranging from physics and film history to Utopian architecture and European modernism. Macula B/2 belongs to a group of sculptures comprised of thin rings of corrugated cardboard. Each ring is cut from a template based on a drawing of a particular shape, such as a circle. Each drawing, in turn, is a handmade copy of the one that preceded it. As the drawings accumulate, the imperfections of the first drawing do as well—producing, in the case of Macula B/2, an array of sensuous curves, bulges, indentations, and furrows. When the light strikes the sculpture in just the right way, its static materiality gives way to an animated effervescence.
