Macula B/2,

More Context
Known for a body of work in sculpture, video, and installation, Tobias Putrih explores subjects ranging from physics and film history to Utopian architecture and European modernism. Macula B/2 belongs to a group of sculptures comprised of thin rings of corrugated cardboard. Each ring is cut from a template based on a drawing of a circle, while each drawing is a handmade copy of the one that preceded it. As the drawings accumulate, the imperfections of the first drawing multiply, producing the bulges, indentations, and furrows seen here. When light strikes the sculpture from a particular direction, its static materiality succumbs to an animated effervescence, thanks to the perforations along the sides of the cardboard cutouts. "Macula" is Latin for spot, and it refers to an area of the eye where perception is at its most acute.
