Canaletto, Italian, 1697–1768
x1946-159

These two views, comprising an imaginary panorama of Venice and its lagoon, were initially etched on one plate, which Canaletto subsequently cut in half and published as separate prints; impressions made before the division are extremely rare. Vernacular Venetian houses, including the one on the left with the inscribed date and the artist’s initials, are juxtaposed with domed churches and classical ruins—the latter recalling Canaletto’s visit to Rome in 1720.
