Arriving in Dresden in 1905 to study architecture, Schmidt-Rottluff left school after one year to pursue painting (and, later, printmaking) with the other artists who formed Die Brücke. Schmidt-Rottluff's simplified, angular forms reflect his interest in African art, which he first encountered directly at the Ethnographic Museum in Dresden. Here, his emphasis on the graphic quality of the woodcut, with its use of parallel lines and the contrast between black and white forms, gives the figure a monumental quality.
