After Washington, Abraham Lincoln is the most represented and heroized president in American history; if Washington established the nation’s framework, Lincoln preserved its unity. Lincoln’s presidency (1861–65) was dominated by the Civil War, and central to his victorious leadership of Union forces was his passage of the thirteenth amendment, which abolished slavery. Hesler photographed Lincoln in 1858 and 1860, producing pictures that were reproduced and circulated widely—cementing their role as iconic images—during the 1860 presidential campaign and long after his death.
