2009-91
In 1859, Lai Afong established one of the early photographic studios in Hong Kong; in addition to portraits, he produced cityscapes, landscapes, and street scenes. In this image, the signs hanging from the storefronts advertise a variety of shops, from watch repair to medical remedies. The two men at left wear the queue, a long braid combined with a shaved forehead, indicating they are subjects of the Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty who imposed this hairstyle.
