Early in her career, Takaezu—who taught on the Princeton campus for many years—traveled to Japan to study the pottery techniques, architecture, and culture of the country. Remembrance, a monumental bronze bell cast from one of the artist’s ceramic vessels, hangs beneath a torii, a wooden gateway that demarcates sacred space at a Japanese Shinto shrine. This structure stands guard at the alcove of the memorial garden in which a circle of bronze stars commemorates the fourteen Princeton alumni who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; the surrounding plants symbolize renewal.
