The Heart Sutra in the calligraphy of the Qianlong emperor is written in eleven columns flanked by the title of the sutra repeated at right and left along with the emperor’s inscription dated 1744. The title is also written in large seal-script calligraphy in a band across the top. Below the sutra text is a scene showing a figure and attendant in a cave looking out at a figure walking on turbulent waves of a mountain stream. This scene is said to be the Tongzi lifo tu 童子禮佛图 by the Qianlong emperor as copied by the court artist Ding Guanpeng 丁觀鹏 (d. ca. 1770). A decorative band encircles all.
The engraved stone from which this rubbing was taken was carved in 1744 on a stele erected in front of the Dahongbao Dian 大雄寶殿hall in the Fayuan Si 法源寺 temple, Beijing. The Qianlong emperor’s Fayuan Si zhanli shi 法源寺瞻禮詩 was cut in 1780 on the back of this stele.
