Description
Arranged horizontally, at right is title in seal-script calligraphy and a portrait of Wen Tianxiang 文天祥 (1236-1283), a scholar, poet, and official in the last years of the Southern Song dynasty, who became a popular symbol of patriotism and righteousness for his resistance against the Mongol forces. Shown from the waist up, Wen wears an official robe with a rank badge and official’s hat with stiff side flaps (futou 襆頭, also known as the wushamao 烏紗帽) that anachronistically are in a Ming dynasty style. Left of the portrait is a 1794 inscription with an encomium by Qin Ying 秦嬴 (act. late 18th century), who recounts that the portrait had been given to him and that while serving in office at Wenzhou 溫州, he composed the encomium and had the portrait carved in stone and mounted in a wall of a shrine to Wen Tianxiang standing next to the Jiangxin Si 江心寺 temple. Qin Ying’s contemporaries, Chen Guangning 陳廣寧 (d. 1814) and Qian Yong Qian Yong 錢泳 (1759-1844) viewed the portrait together and added an colophon in 1794 that was also engraved on the stone that is the base for this rubbing. The engraved stone is said to survive at the shrine.
