Description
Below a transcription of the Heart Sutra, the robed figure of the bodhisattva Guanyin sits on a flat-topped rock carrying a child in her lap who points and looks up at a flying parrot with a branch in its beak. On the rock behind Guanyin is a small vase holding pure water and a willow sprig. The scene depicts the wishes of parents asking Guanyin for the birth of a child. An inscription attributes the original painting as a work of 1312 by the female artist Guan Daosheng 管道昇 (1262-1319). The image was copied by a later unidentified female artist by the name of Wang Zhu 王珠, or known as Lady Xuexiang 雪香女士, and carved onto stone in 1862 by Hu Wannian 胡萬年.
