Inscription
Portrait of Mr. Huang Shangu [i.e., Huang Tingjian] Right: (this inscription next to the title appears on this rubbing but does not seem to be on the actual pictorial stone) Weng Fanggang 翁方綱 (1733-1818), calligraphy 「似僧有髮,似俗無塵。 “Lord Wenji [i.e., Huang Tingjian] was the Administrative Aide (biejia 别駕) of Fuzhou 涪州 and settled down in Rongzhou 戎州. He lived in Sichuan for the longest time and the strength of his character was common knowledge. His life of poetry revered Du Wenzhen [i.e., Du Fu]. In the jiashen cyclical year of the Guangxu reign [1884], the dafu official [i.e., Ding Baozhen 丁寶楨, the Governor-general of Sichuan] followed Lu Fangweng [i.e., Lu You 陸游] example of associated sacrifices and placed the lord to the left of Du Fu . . . . [Huang] Yungu, a 39th generation descendant of the lord, as made clear in the Pudie [geneology record], does not dare to face resentment and hid [this familial relationship], yet he cannot but not forget the generosity of dafu official honoring [the lord’s] former virtues. He respectfully traced the lord’s image, erected the stele and sat in front in reverence, and recorded the account [of this project] on the back.
Description
