Inge Morath, 1923–2002; born Graz, Austria; died New York, NY
2009-146
In 1956, soon after joining Magnum Photos in New York, Morath showed up at the Manhattan home of Saul Steinberg, who greeted her wearing over his head a paper bag on which he had drawn a self-portrait. Thus began a collaborative enterprise known as “The Mask Series,” consisting of staged photographs taken by Morath of Steinberg either on his own or with others.
