Young Boy at Vegetable Market,

ca. 1910

Lewis Wickes Hine, 1874–1940; born Oshkosh, WI; died Hastings-on-Hudson, NY; active New York City, NY
2010-58
Young Boy at Vegetable Market bears marks of use by the National Child Labor Committee, a children’s- and worker’s-rights organization that hired Hine to travel throughout the United States documenting the harrowing experiences of working children. Many of Hine’s photographs were edited to suit the needs of the publication in which they were reproduced. In this photograph, the image of the young boy was outlined with white paint before being rephotographed, printed at a reduced scale per the listed dimensions (“2 1⁄2”), and cut out along the white outline to be pasted into a newspaper, broadside, or pamphlet.
