Drawn in the style of an engraving is the legendary battle between the Amazons and the Greeks in which the mythical female warrior tribe was defeated by the likes of Heracles and Theseus—a triumph of progress over savagery, light over darkness. Amazonomachy, the depiction of this battle, was one of the most popular genres of Greek art and played an important role in the Greeks’ view of themselves as a civilized people struggling against the barbarian hordes.
