Julia Margaret Cameron, British, 1815–1879
2010-177
A pioneering photographer, Cameron produced striking portraits of many celebrities, including this one of John Herschel, the famed astronomer. Herschel had introduced Cameron to photography several decades before this image was taken, but she did not take up the medium until the age of forty-eight, when she was gifted a camera by her daughter. Taking photographs of friends, family, and servants, she embraced the imperfections of the medium, allowing scratches, freckles, and smudges to be part of her work.
