The Parable of The Good Shepherd,

1565

Philip Galle, 1537–1612; born Haarlem, Netherlands; died Antwerp, Belgium
after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, ca. 1525–1569; born Breda, Netherlands; died Brussels, Belgium
2010-145
Philips Galle began his career as an engraver for Hieronymous Cock’s Antwerp publishing house, Aux Quatre Vents. After Cock’s death, Galle established his own publishing house. While neither Galle’s name nor his initials appears on the Caritas print that was engraved by Galle and published by Cock, Galle’s name appears twice in this engraving, once to signify that Galle was the engraver and once to signal that he was also the publisher. Brueghel’s name also appears on the print, where he is credited as the designer. By deploying a broad range of textural and linear effects—from the dense crosshatching to convey shadows to the stippling that describes the sheep’s fleece—Galle demonstrates his virtuosity as an engraver.
