Tall Trees and a View of the Roman Campagna from Genzano,

1773

Jakob Philipp Hackert, German, 1737–1806
2011-23
Hackert lived in Italy for most of his successful career as a landscape artist, creating souvenir views of Rome and the surrounding Campagna for the growing tourist market. As inscribed by the artist, this drawing was made near the picturesque town of Genzano, about twelve miles southeast of Rome in the Alban Hills. The foreground is dominated by a cluster of ancient oak trees towering above the rustic couple below. Rendered with meticulous detail, this drawing characterizes Hackert’s rigorous landscape methodology, combining idealized composition and scientific observation.
