Description

This print depicts a comic narrator, not a typical kabuki theatrical scene. The printed wood frame bears the date of the print: the eleventh year of the Tenpo era (1840). The red cartouche on the mid-right notes this print was commissioned.

The interior setting is very detailed: the nicely adorned lacquer lectern, the blue-and-white tea pot on a stove, and the sliding doors behind of the figure. This is a view into an aspect of the theater rarely portrayed.
