Benjamin J. Falk, American, 1853–1925
2011-25
Falk was a highly regarded professional photographer known for his inventive portraits of Broadway stars that served as advertisements for the latest stage shows. His early adoption of artificial light, creative staging, and playful posing helped shaped American ideals of personal appearance, glamour, and publicity. Here the assured expression of Thomas Edison, who stands with his hands tucked into his pockets, conveys the confidence of an inventor at the zenith of his career.
