Shiva with his sons Ganesha and Karttikeya,
late 19th–early 20th century
Indian
2011-60
This wooden relief sculpture was most likely made to decorate one of the grand domestic residences of the merchant community in Chettinad, southeastern India, during the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The work was probably displayed as an overdoor frieze. The central figure is Shiva, one of the principal Hindu deities. He is depicted riding his bull and flanked by his sons; Ganesha, with his elephant head, is on the left, and Karttikeya is on the right.
